What is the origin of the first carpets?

Tufting has its roots in the ancient history of weaving. This ancient technique of making custom rugs and textiles, has historical origins in various ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Persia, Greece and Rome. Archaeological evidence shows that tufting was practiced to create unique decorative rugs, textiles and ornate fabrics.

Persian rugs

In Persia, hand tufting was widespread among nomadic tribes, village workshops and royal manufactories, each with its distinctive patterns, wool quality and colors. The oldest known carpet is the Pazyryk Carpet classified as a Persian carpet dating back to the 5th century BC. This finely woven rug reveals a meticulously depicted hunting scene, illustrating images of deer and men on horseback. The remarkable Pazyryk Carpet, is a relic of ancient Persian weaving art, capturing in its knots and patterns a bygone era when scenes of daily life were immortalized with remarkable skill.

How has the carpet evolved through the ages?

Persian rugs have had a major global influence, introduced to Europe during the Crusades and found in Renaissance paintings, Tibetan monasteries and sites along the Silk Road.

Tufting was also practiced in the northern regions of Europe by the Vikings, in North America by indigenous peoples such as Native Americans, and in Asia, notably India and China, where each region had its own tufting traditions and styles .

Each tufting community developed unique designs, often reflecting their culture, customs and beliefs. Tufting has evolved over time, adapting to cultural and technical influences, creating a wide diversity of styles and patterns in tufted rugs and textiles around the world.

L'inventrice du tufting gun, Catherine Evans Whitener

Who invented the tufting gun?

Tufting has evolved over time through technical advances, giving rise to specialized tools and more sophisticated manufacturing methods. Particularly in the 1930s with Catherine Evans Whitener who revolutionized this art. This American invented the first needle gun called the tufting gun. Coming from rural Georgia in Dalton, Catherine Evans began her career by reproducing an old bedspread considered a family heirloom which had been made using a technique called "candle wicking", an almost extinct weaving art. Catherine Evans was inspired by a family heirloom and made her first hand-tufted bedspread. Thus, she founded the Evans Manufacturing Company in 1917, a pioneer in the field which she managed until 1963. As recognition, she received the Georgia Woman of Achievement in 2001.

The modern Tufting gun

The first tufting machines were adapted models of sewing machines like the Singer 31-15, allowing the production of continuous rolls of tufted fabrics. The fibers used have also evolved, from cotton, rayon, wool, nylon and acrylic wools.

The modern tufting gun, like the AK DUO, emerged in the 2000s, improving efficiency and ease of use and has also been perfected over the years. This development greatly contributed to popularizing the tufting technique and broadening its applications in the decoration and furniture industry.

How do you tuft a rug?

Tufting weaving is based on a precise methodology, skillfully combining the use of different materials and the careful handling of specialized tools. The fibers are worked with artisanal dexterity, allowing the creation of varied patterns, textures and designs, giving each rug a unique identity.

Preparations

The process of a tufting creation begins with a frame over which a canvas is stretched. Inspiration and creativity decide the rest for the shapes, design, drawings, or reproduction chosen. Just like the colors offering an extraordinary range of customization.

Tufting

Using the tufting gun, we will load wool into the needle of the gun. Like painting with wool, we proceed with tufting on the canvas to create our carpet thread by thread. Patience and dexterity are required during many hours of weaving depending on the size and complexity of the piece.

Finishes

Once the weaving is complete, a secondary fabric is glued to the back of the rug. We then carry out the finishing touches using a clipper to flatten the wool and give relief, sculpting the creation in a unique way.

The evolution towards modernity and social networks has revived interest in this technique. Social media like Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok have played a crucial role in allowing artists, rug dealers, collectors and fiber enthusiasts to exchange ideas and inspirations, thereby restoring visibility to this traditional craft. This visibility has sparked a renewed interest in tufting, inspiring more and more people to discover and experiment with this creative method.
